Flip 7 With a Vengeance

As in Flip 7, collect Number cards without ever drawing the same number twice — but this time, stopping no longer keeps you safe: opponents can still come and take from your spread.

Setup

  • 92 Number cards, 6 Penalty cards and 11 Action cards. The deck is pyramid-shaped: a single 0, two 2s, and so on up to the 13s.
  • One person deals; each player receives their cards face up in front of them, one at a time.
  • Three to ten players, ages 8 and up, twenty to thirty minutes. The game is standalone: you do not need the original Flip 7.

How to play

  • On your turn, ask for one more card or stop for the round.
  • Receiving a number you already have makes you bust: the round scores nothing.
  • Gathering seven different Number cards is a Flip 7: the round ends at once.
  • Penalty cards replace the original game's bonuses: they take away points or halve the round's score.
  • Action cards let you steal a card, swap cards with an opponent, make someone discard, or force someone to receive the next four cards.
  • The big difference from Flip 7: points are only counted at the very end of the round, and played cards stay exposed. A player who stopped can still be targeted.

Scoring

  • Each Number card is worth its face value; the 0 scores nothing.
  • A Flip 7 — seven different Number cards — scores 15 more points.
  • Penalty cards take away 2 to 10 points, or halve the round's score.
  • The Zero card brings the round's total back to zero, unless you made a Flip 7.
  • The Unlucky 7 makes you discard all your Number and Penalty cards, except the 7 itself.

End of the game

  • The game ends as soon as a player reaches 200 points: that player wins.
  • In brutal mode, scores can go below zero.

House rules and pitfalls

  • The base game is played with three or more players: with two, attack cards keep landing on the same person too quickly.
  • The 13s make rounds tenser than in Flip 7: more different numbers, so more possible duplicates.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need Flip 7 to play?

No, Flip 7 With a Vengeance is a complete game. It is a nastier version, not an expansion.

What really changes compared to Flip 7?

Three things: bonuses become penalties, cards go up to 13, and stopping no longer protects you — points are only counted at the end of the round, and an opponent can still steal a card from you in the meantime.

What does the Zero card do?

It brings your score for the round back to zero. Unless you made a Flip 7: in that case it does not affect you.

What does the Unlucky 7 do?

It makes you discard all your Number and Penalty cards. You keep only the 7 itself, and the round starts again from almost nothing.

Can you have a negative score?

In brutal mode, yes: penalties can take you below zero. In a normal game, you stop at zero.

How many points do you need to win?

Two hundred, as in Flip 7.
