Frequently asked questions

Marquoir’s choices, and the reasons behind them: what stays on your device, what leaves it, where the rules come from.

The basics

Is Marquoir free?

Yes, completely: no subscription, no in-app purchase, no ads. Marquoir sells nothing and shares nothing with third parties.

Do I need an account?

No. Everything works without one: the rules, the score keeper, your players, your history, your collection. It’s actually the normal mode: everything stays on your device.

An account is only needed to find your games on another device, to invite someone by their username, to rate games and to submit a score sheet.

Why the name Marquoir?

In French, a marquoir is what keeps the points: in billiards and in real tennis, it’s where the score of the game is marked. That’s exactly the app’s job at your table.

Is Marquoir available in English?

Yes: the FR | EN switch at the top of the page changes the language, and your choice is remembered. The rule sheets are translated; the French version remains the reference.

Your data

Where are my games saved?

On your device, in the browser’s or the app’s storage: players, game nights, games, rounds, favourites, collection and settings. Nothing is sent to a server unless you create an account or share a game.

The flip side: clearing the site’s data or uninstalling the app erases all of it too. Use the export in Settings, or an account.

If I take a photo of my box, who sees it?

Only you, and only on that device. The photo is shrunk and then stored on your phone; it is never sent anywhere, even with an account, and nobody else sees it.

That’s on purpose: Marquoir shows your real box without using an image that belongs to the publisher, and without sending anything.

So it doesn’t follow your account to another device and isn’t part of the export in Settings: after changing phones or clearing the site’s data, you’ll need to take it again.

I’m changing phones: how do I keep my games?

With an account: sign in on the new one, and your players, game nights, games and preferences come back.

Without an account: on the old one, Settings → Export; on the new one, Settings → Import. The import merges with what’s already there: it never deletes anything.

Box photos don’t follow in either case.

Open Settings

What does an account keep, and who sees it?

Your name, your email address, your username, your password in a form that can’t be read back, and what gets synced: players (first name and colour), game nights, games, rounds and preferences.

Your email address is shown to no one. Others only see your username, when they invite you to a table.

The Privacy page

How do I delete my account?

Settings → Profile → “Delete the account”: once you confirm with your password, the account and everything attached to it are erased.

If you can no longer access your account, write to benjamin@marquoir.fr from the account’s email address.

The procedure in detail

Does Marquoir track what I do?

It counts the pages read and a few actions — a game started, a tool opened, a dictation — with Umami, installed on our own server. The goal: knowing which rule sheets are read, so we review those first.

Umami sets no cookies, which is why there’s no banner to accept. The IP address isn’t kept, and a counted action never contains a first name, a score or anything you type.

Exactly what is counted

The app and offline use

Does Marquoir work offline?

Yes, after opening it once with a connection: the rules, the score keeper and your data stay available, even for a game you’ve never opened. A game in a cellar or on a train is covered.

Whatever goes through the server — account sync, sharing a game, recognising a new barcode — waits for the connection to come back.

How do I get the latest version?

Nothing to do: every time it opens, Marquoir checks for a new version and downloads it; a banner tells you.

If the display seems stuck on an old version, Settings → “Re-download for offline use” refreshes everything. Do it with a connection.

Is there an app for my phone?

On Android, the Marquoir app is coming to Google Play. Meanwhile, Chrome can install the site as an app: ⋮ menu → “Install app”.

On iPhone and iPad, there’s no app in the App Store: open marquoir.fr in Safari, tap Share then “Add to Home Screen”. Marquoir then opens like an app, offline use included.

Why does the app ask for my year of birth?

To protect younger players. Only the age group is kept, on the device; the year itself isn’t.

Under 13, nothing leaves the device: no account, no sync, no sharing, no dictation, no audience measurement. And the few games that aren’t meant for children — gambling games, a drinking game, adult humour — aren’t offered.

The question is only asked in the installed app, never on the website.

What are the notifications for?

To keep the current game at hand when you leave the app: a notification reminds you of it, and disappears when you come back or when the game ends.

Marquoir only asks for permission when it’s actually needed, never on first launch.

When I dictate scores, where does my voice go?

“Dictate the round” uses your browser’s speech recognition — Google’s, on Chrome and in the Android app. Marquoir only receives the transcribed text, on the device, and never records the sound.

The microphone only turns on when you tap the button.

What does Marquoir do with the camera?

It reads a barcode or a table’s QR code, on the device: no image is sent. A box photo, for its part, stays on your phone.

Games and rules

Where do the rule sheets come from?

Every sheet is written by Marquoir, in its own words. How a game is played and how it’s scored can be reused freely, but the text of a rulebook belongs to its publisher: we never copy it.

A sheet checked against the official rules — the publisher’s rulebook or a federation’s regulations — says so, with the month of the check.

The sheet doesn’t match the rules I know

Many games are played differently from one table to the next. The sheet follows the official rules; the common variants are set before the game, and your choices can become your “house rules”, remembered for next time.

If the sheet gets the official rules wrong, tap “Report a mistake” on the sheet: every report is read.

Why no pictures of the boxes?

Box artwork belongs to the publishers and their illustrators. So Marquoir draws its own covers, and you can take a photo of your box: the photo stays with you.

A game is missing: how do I suggest it?

At the top of the catalogue, “Missing a game? Suggest it”: the game’s name, a link and a message reach us. Your email address, optional, is only used to reply to you.

Requested games come first, as long as their official rules can be found.

A game you invented or tweaked at home? Just below, create a house game, with your own way of scoring.

What happens when I scan a barcode?

The code is read on the device; only its number goes to Marquoir’s server, which holds the shared database of boxes. A box that has been recognised once is then recognised offline too.

A code the database doesn’t know yet is noted so it can be added, with nothing about you; you can also tell us which game it is.

How do game ratings work?

With an account, you rate a game from 1 to 5 — one rating per person, hence the account. No comments, so nothing to moderate, and nobody knows who rated what: the sheet only shows the average and the number of ratings.

In Discover, are my choices recorded?

Each card swiped right (want to play it) or left (pass) adds one to the game’s counter, with no account and no identifier: two swipes can’t be linked together, nor traced back to where they came from.

Can I share a score sheet?

Yes, with an account: submit it, and it becomes visible to everyone once approved.

Games, sharing and the table

Can other people see my games?

No, unless you decide so: by inviting an account by its username (it then sees the games it took part in), or by sharing a game’s follow link.

Sharing a game without an account: what is sent?

A copy of the game — the game itself, its variants, the first names as you typed them and the scores — so the link can show the scores live. It’s attached to nothing that identifies you.

It’s erased seven days after its last update, or straight away if you tap “Stop sharing”.

Shared games in detail

How does everyone enter their points from their own phone?

When setting up the game, “Let the table join” shows a QR code. Everyone scans it (or types its six-character code), picks their name and sends their points; the table’s sheet picks them up.

A table can only be joined for an hour. The name you type is only kept long enough to seat you, then it lives with the shared game and is erased with it.

Why isn’t a player in the rankings?

For a game night, wins are counted: everyone has played the same number of games.

Over time, players are ranked by win rate, which means nothing after a single game: 1 win out of 1 would beat 7 out of 10. So a player enters the rankings after three finished games; before that, they’re “not ranked yet”.

I lost a trophy: is that normal?

Trophies are recalculated from your history; nothing is set in stone. Deleting a game entered by mistake also removes the trophy it earned: a trophy born from a typo wasn’t really one.
