You’ll need the game box. Marquoir sums up the rules and keeps score.

Setup

  • The game is for 2 to 4 players.
  • Unfold the Islands board and place the Heroic Feat cards around it, in identical piles: 4 cards per pile with four players, 3 with three, 2 with two.
  • The Temple holds the die faces for sale, sorted by pool; with two players, remove 2 faces at random from each pool of the Sanctuary.
  • Each player takes a hero inventory, their resource markers on 0, their hero on its starting portal, and two dice, one light and one dark, assembled in their starting configuration.
  • The youngest player goes first. Starting gold follows turn order: 3, 2, 1, then 0.
  • The round marker goes on the first round.

How to play

  • In each round, each player is the active player once.
  • Step 1: all players roll both dice and receive what the faces show (gold, sun shards, moon shards, glory). With two players, this step is done twice.
  • Step 2: the active player may trigger each of their reinforcement cards once.
  • Step 3: they take one action of their choice.
  • Make an offering to the gods: buy with gold one or more different faces from the Temple, and forge them onto your dice at once, replacing faces you remove.
  • Perform a heroic feat: pay the card's cost in shards, move your hero to that island's portal and take the card. A hero already there is ousted back to its starting portal, and its owner receives a divine blessing as compensation (they roll both dice).
  • Step 4: once per turn, they may spend 2 sun shards to take a second action.
  • Reserves have a limit: anything beyond it is lost. At 100 glory points, take a hundred token and start again from 0.

Scoring

  • Each player adds up the glory on their inventory (hundred tokens included) and the glory printed on their Heroic Feat cards.
  • In Marquoir, the sheet has two lines: glory on the inventory and glory on the Heroic Feat cards.

End of the game

  • The game lasts nine rounds with two or four players, and ten rounds with three.
  • It ends after the last round; the most glory wins, and tied players share the victory.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a removed face back on your die?

No. A removed face stays next to your inventory for the rest of the game, and you never rearrange your dice other than by forging.

Can you perform the same feat twice?

Yes, as long as cards remain in the pile, even in the same turn thanks to the extra action.
