Dorfromantik: The Board Game

Build a peaceful landscape together, tile after tile, that meets the inhabitants' requests, with the longest possible railway and river, to raise a shared score that unlocks, from game to game, the hidden content of the box.

You’ll need the game box. Marquoir sums up the rules and keeps score.

Setup

  • A cooperative game for 1 to 6 players, ages 8 and up: the whole table shares a single score.
  • Shuffle the Task tiles face down and make several piles.
  • Shuffle the Landscape tiles face down, put 3 of them back in the box unseen, and make several piles with the rest.
  • Shuffle the 25 Task tokens face down and separate them by type: Forest, Field, Village, Railway, River.
  • The score pad and the campaign pad wait until the end of the game; the five numbered boxes stay closed until the campaign unlocks them.
  • Choose a first player at random; play goes clockwise.

How to play

  • On your turn, reveal a tile, Task or Landscape, and place it after discussing it with the others; the final decision belongs to the player whose turn it is.
  • For the first three turns, reveal a Task tile. After that, reveal one if fewer than 3 Task tiles with a token are in the landscape; otherwise, reveal a Landscape tile.
  • Each Task tile revealed immediately gets a token of its type, turned to show its value: 4, 5 or 6.
  • Each new tile must touch at least one tile already placed along one side. A railway or a river cannot be cut off: an edge touching it must continue it. Forests, fields, villages and meadows can be placed freely.
  • A task is completed when its area, railway or river has exactly as many tiles as the token's value. The token is set aside until scoring.
  • You cannot place the Task tile you have just revealed if it immediately exceeds its token's value, or if it closes off its area with too few tiles.
  • Any other tile, however, may push a task in play over its value, or close off its area while too small: the task fails and its token goes back to the box.
  • A single tile can complete several tasks. When the Task tiles run out, carry on with Landscape tiles only.
  • Flag tiles are placed normally; their flag scores only if its area is closed off at the end.

Scoring

  • Tasks: the sum of the completed tokens, by type.
  • Flags: each flag in a closed-off area scores as many points as that area has tiles.
  • Longest railway and longest river: 1 point per tile of the longest unbroken stretch of each.
  • Unlocked content: the points granted by the elements unlocked over the campaign.
  • The final score adds it all up.
  • In Marquoir, the table is a single participant: enter the tasks by type, the flags, the number of tiles of the two longest lines, then the points from unlocked content.

End of the game

  • The game ends when a Landscape tile must be revealed and none are left; Task tiles not yet revealed do not count.
  • If the last Landscape tile completes or fails a task, keep revealing and placing Task tiles as long as they complete or fail tasks.
  • Then count the shared score and copy it onto the campaign sheet.
  • Depending on that score, tick circles on the progress track: 1 below 100 points, 2 from 100 to 109, then one more at 110, 130, 150 and so on every 20 points, up to 15 from 350.
  • The first green hexagon reached opens box 1, the second box 2, the following ones Achievement cards from box 3; three marked circles on the track unlock a red Heart token when ticked.

House rules and pitfalls

  • An area gathers neighbouring tiles of the same terrain whose edges match.
  • You may place a Task tile in an area, railway or river that already holds one, with or without a token.
  • An unlocked Achievement card applies to every later game of the campaign; its new tiles are shuffled in with the others, but special signpost tiles only after setting aside the 3 Landscape tiles at setup.
  • You may pause a campaign to start another one with a different group.

Frequently asked questions

How do you score in Dorfromantik?

Add up the completed Task tokens, the flags of closed-off areas (one point per tile of the area) and one point per tile of the longest railway and the longest river. Add the points from content unlocked during the campaign.

When do you have to reveal a Task tile?

On the first three turns, then on every turn in which fewer than 3 Task tiles still carry a token in the landscape.

What happens if an area goes over its token's value?

The task fails and its token goes back to the box. This is allowed with any other tile, but not with the Task tile you have just revealed.

Do tile edges always have to match?

Only for railways and rivers, which must continue. Forests, fields and villages can go wherever you like.
