You’ll need the game box. Marquoir sums up the rules and keeps score.

Setup

  • The game is for 2 to 5 players.
  • Set out the board, the Achievement cards, and the shuffled decks of Meals, Souvenirs, Encounters and Hot Springs.
  • The Panoramas (Sea, Mountain, Rice Paddy) are sorted by type and by number, with 1 on top.
  • Each player is dealt two Traveller tiles at random, keeps one and takes from the bank the coins it shows.
  • The travellers start at the first inn, Kyoto, in a random order; each marker starts at 0 on the score track.

How to play

  • The traveller furthest back on the road always plays next; if they are still last after moving, they play again.
  • They move forward to any free space they choose, never backwards, but must stop at every inn.
  • Double spaces are only used with 4 and 5 players.
  • Village: look at 3 souvenirs and buy any you like. In a set, the first card scores 1 point, then each card of a family not yet in the set scores 3, 5 and finally 7; a duplicate scores 1 and starts another set.
  • Farm: gain 3 coins.
  • Panorama: take the next section of the landscape and score its number. A finished panorama closes those stops to you.
  • Hot Spring: a card worth 2 or 3 points.
  • Temple: donate 1 to 3 coins, 1 point per coin.
  • Encounter: draw a character and apply its effect.
  • Inn: the first to arrive draws as many meals as there are players plus one, buys one if they wish, then the next arrivals choose from the rest. A meal scores 6 points; you never taste the same delicacy twice.

Scoring

  • Points are scored along the journey, on the track.
  • The first to complete each type of panorama gets a 3-point achievement.
  • On arrival in Edo, Gourmet, Bather, Chatterbox and Collector are worth 3 points each; on a tie, all tied players score them.
  • Temple donations: 10 points for the most generous, 7 for the second, 4 for the third, 2 for the other donors, nothing for those who gave nothing.
  • In Marquoir, the counter replaces the track: add each player's points as they score them.

End of the game

  • The journey ends when everyone has reached the last inn, Edo, and had a chance to eat one last meal there.
  • Most points wins; on a tie, most Achievement cards wins.

House rules and pitfalls

  • With two players, a neutral traveller moves when it is last, moved by the leading player; it only has an effect at the temple and at inns.
  • First journey (voyage initiatique): without Traveller tiles, each player starts with 7 coins.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to spend at the temple?

Yes: anyone who stops at the temple must donate at least one coin. Without coins, you cannot stop there, nor at a village.

Can you skip several stops at once?

Yes, as far as you like, provided the space is free and you do not go past the next inn.
