You’ll need the game box. Marquoir sums up the rules and keeps score.

Setup

  • The current box holds 112 cards: in each of the four colours, two of each number from 1 to 9, one Reverse, two Skip, two Discard All, one Hit 1 and two Hit 2; plus four Wild cards and four Wild Attack-Attack cards. There is no 0.
  • The launcher runs on three C batteries, not included.
  • The highest number drawn picks the dealer; special cards don't count for this draw.
  • The dealer deals seven cards to each player, turns one card over to start the discard pile, then loads all the rest face down into the launcher.
  • Switch the launcher on and point it at the player on the dealer's left, who starts. Throughout the game, the launcher faces whoever's turn it is.
  • Two to ten players.

How to play

  • As in Uno, play a card of the same colour, number or symbol as the discard pile, or a Wild card.
  • You never draw here: if you can't play, you press the launcher button. Sometimes nothing comes out, sometimes one card, sometimes a burst. Everything that comes out, including a card left sticking out of the slot, goes into the hand of whoever pressed.
  • Once you've pressed, your turn is over, even if a card that came out could be played: that's the big difference with Uno, where you may play the card you just drew.
  • You may decline to play a playable card: press the button instead, and your turn ends.
  • Reverse changes the direction of play. Skip makes the next player miss their turn.
  • Wild: goes on any card, even when you hold another playable card, and lets you pick the colour.
  • Discard All: get rid of all your cards of one colour at once, finishing the stack with the Discard All of that colour. A Discard All may also go on another Discard All.
  • Hit 1, Hit 2: the next player presses the button once or twice, then their turn is over.
  • Wild Attack-Attack: also a Wild. Pick the colour, then any other player, turn the launcher towards them; they press twice. Play resumes with the player after the victim.
  • Mega Hit: when a Hit card or a Wild Attack-Attack targets you, you may pass it on by playing any Hit card, whatever its colour. The hits add up and move to the next player, and so on until someone has no Hit card: they take all the hits. A Wild Attack-Attack added to the stack adds two hits and lets you aim at anyone.
  • If cards come out before you've finished the required presses, you may stop there. After a Mega Hit stack, play resumes after the player who laid the first Hit card.
  • Shout Uno as you play your next-to-last card. Forgetting, if an opponent catches it, costs two presses of the button.
  • When the discard pile is as thick as a deck, shuffle it and reload the launcher.
  • The hand ends as soon as a player has played their last card. If it's a Wild Attack-Attack, the attack still happens.

Scoring

  • The winner of the hand collects the value of the cards left in the other players' hands.
  • Numbers: face value. Reverse, Skip and Hit 1: 20 points. Discard All: 30 points. Hit 2: 40 points. Wild and Wild Attack-Attack: 50 points.
  • Cards shot out by an attack played as the last card count in the tally.

End of the game

  • The first player to reach 500 points wins the game.
  • Another count allowed by the rules: everyone notes what's left in their own hand each hand; when a player reaches or passes 500 points, the lowest total wins.
  • Challenge Uno Attack, official variant: same count, but each player who reaches the chosen limit is eliminated, down to a final duel.

House rules and pitfalls

  • The name varies by country and era: UNO Attack, UNO Attack!, UNO Extreme. French players often call it Uno Attaque or Uno Contre-Attaque.
  • 2005 box: two Hit 2 per colour (20 points), one Discard All and one Trade Hands per colour (30 points each), four Wild cards, two Wild All Hit and two Wild Hit-Fire, at 50 points each. Trade Hands forces you to swap hands with the player of your choice, and you can't go out on it. Wild All Hit makes every other player press once; Wild Hit-Fire makes the next player press until cards come out.
  • 2010 box: two Discard All per colour, Hit 2 at 20 points, Wild Attack-Attack at 50, no Hit 1 and no Mega Hit. In both older boxes, suggesting a card to another player costs four presses.
  • With an older set, count the cards using your box's values: the counter only adds up the total you enter.
  • With two players: Reverse acts as a Skip, and whoever plays a Skip or a Reverse plays again at once. After a Hit 2, play comes back to whoever played it.
  • For classic Uno rules, with its draw pile and Draw Two cards, see the Uno page.

Frequently asked questions

How much are the cards worth in Uno Attack?

In the current box: numbers at face value, Reverse, Skip and Hit 1 20 points, Discard All 30, Hit 2 40, Wild and Wild Attack-Attack 50. The winner of the hand collects the total of the other hands, and the game is played to 500 points.

Can you play a card that just came out of the launcher?

No. As soon as you've pressed the button, your turn is over, even if one of the cards that came out could go on the discard pile. It stays in your hand until your next turn.

Can you pass a Hit card on?

Yes, with the Mega Hit rule of the current box: play another Hit card, of any colour, and the hits move to the next player, adding up. Whoever can't pass it on presses as many times as the total.

What if cards come out before you've finished pressing?

You may stop there: the cards that came out go into your hand, and the remaining presses are dropped.

How do you score a hand of Uno Attack?

Add up the cards left in each opponent's hand, using your box's values, and the total goes to the winner of the hand. In the app, enter each player's cards and the winner collects the lot.
