Pickomino

Collect, roll after roll, the Pickomino tiles with the most worms: the number of worms, not the value of the tiles, decides the winner.

You’ll need the game box. Marquoir sums up the rules and keeps score.

Setup

  • The game is for 2 to 7 players, with 8 dice and 16 Pickomino tiles numbered 21 to 36.
  • Lay the tiles face up in ascending order in the middle of the table: this is the grill.
  • Each tile shows 1 to 4 worms: one worm from 21 to 24, two from 25 to 28, three from 29 to 32, four from 33 to 36.
  • The youngest player takes the 8 dice and starts.

How to play

  • Roll all the available dice, choose one value that came up and set aside all the dice showing it.
  • The faces are worth 1 to 5; the worm face is worth 5 points.
  • You may reroll the remaining dice and keep a new value, never a value already set aside this turn.
  • Stop whenever you like. You must then have at least one worm among the kept dice.
  • With that total, take the tile of the same value from the grill, or steal it from the top of an opponent's stack.
  • If that value is no longer available, take the nearest lower tile from the grill.
  • Tiles you win are stacked face up in front of you: only the top one can be stolen.
  • Bust: no new value to keep, no worm set aside, or a total too low for any available tile.
  • After a bust, put the top tile of your stack back on the grill, and turn face down the highest tile on the grill, unless it is the one you just returned or you had nothing to return.
  • Then pass the dice to the player on your left.

Scoring

  • Each player counts the worms drawn on their tiles.
  • In Marquoir, the counter tracks worms during the game: add a tile's worms when you win it and take them off when you lose it.

End of the game

  • The game ends when no face-up tile is left on the grill.
  • Most worms wins; on a tie, the player with the highest-numbered tile wins.

Frequently asked questions

Can you stop without having kept a worm?

You can stop, but the turn is then a bust: without at least one worm among the kept dice, you take no tile and you give one back.

Does a total of 40 let you take the 36?

Yes: if the exact value does not exist, take the available tile just below it from the grill. To steal from an opponent, however, you need the exact value.
