About the game

Mariage (German: [maʁiˈaːʒə]), pol. mariasz was a popular in Central Europe 6-card trick-and-draw game for 2 players in its basic form in which players scored bonus points for the "marriage" of the king and queen of the same suit. The game, first documented in 1715 in Leipzig, spawned numerous offshoots throughout continental Europe and gave its name to the marriage group of card games, including German sixty-six, Austrian schnapsen, Czech mariáš and Polish-Russian 1000. Many of these are still the national card games of their respective countries. Polish version of the game called mariasz was one of the most popular card games in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and featured some interesting innovations like the queen of trumps being the highest trump.
